If you have never identified with a strong black woman, if you have honestly seen big blank-faced hard-eyed black women and wondered what goes on back there, this is the book for you. Marietta, born big and black and strong and poor in South Carolina is no on I even imagined I'd identify with and enjoy reading about, but you know what? This is a great story. And after reading it, I will never feel the same, as a white-bread white woman, looking at big black blank faced women, the mothers of those great big powerful football players. Marietta makes her way, she has integrity, she feels, she seeks, she loves, and in the end of the story, she finds peace. I feel as though I have shared things with this book's characters. It is an engaging story, almost a "Gone With the Wind" in that you can open it and fall into it at any point. I love it. Would recommend it to anyone.Tags : Amazon.com: I Been in Sorrow's Kitchen and Licked Out All the Pots (9780385470124): Susan Straight: Books,Susan Straight,I Been in Sorrow's Kitchen and Licked Out All the Pots,Anchor,0385470126,African American - Historical,Cultural Heritage,African American women;Fiction.,Domestic fiction.,South Carolina;Fiction.,African American,African American women,Domestic fiction,FICTION African American Historical,FICTION Cultural Heritage,Fiction,Fiction - General,Fiction General,GENERAL,General & Literary Fiction,General Adult,Modern & contemporary fiction,Modern & contemporary fiction (post c 1945),South Carolina
I Been in Sorrow Kitchen and Licked Out All the Pots Susan Straight Books Reviews
This is one of the few books that I have stayed up at night to finish. Since I rise early, normally I am asleep by 10 pm. I didn't get to sleep until after midnight because I knew if I put this book down, I wouldn't sleep anyway.
This is an old favorite of mine. I loaned it and never got it back, so I ordered this one. I am looking forward to reading it again. Actually, I am not sure about my posted violence and sexual content comments. It's been a long time since I first read it.
I read this years ago and scenes from it have stayed with me. It started out slowly, but it was well worth reading. Straight developed characters and landscapes that drew me in and made me see them as real. I've read just one other book by this author. This one was better.
Hello,
I loaned this book and never got it back. Wanted to re-read the story. I love it. When I first read it I wasn't sure I'd like it 'cause there's football in it and I never understood the sport. But, it didn't matter. It's one of my favorite stories. I think I might try to teach it to my students in English because I think they might connect with it.
Susan Straight's work is just amazing.
I am very interested in the Gullah culture, their sweetgrass and palmetto basket weaving, their language. The beginning of the book was rich in that sort of information. I am almost finished and I like that part a lot less. They become people of modern day. Having money and things seems to bring more frictiion into their personal relationships. Marietta is the main character and a strong and unforgettable one.
Marvelous! Be prepared for a slow and deliberate read though as Ms. Straight writes in true Gulah language of the South Carolina island. The history was well researched. The characters very endearing and true to themselves. I highly recommend this book. Bravo, Ms. Straight.
This was a really different book for me to read. I felt in some way I had to learn a new language to follow the dialect ... that was part of what made the book so interesting. Following the main character as she lived her life, made me feel like I was part of her struggles all the way to the end. It was inspiring, and I felt like I learned a lot about the power of love for your children!
