A well researched and easy to understand book by one who has experienced the life style. It is a knowledgeable and no nonsense look at the important aspects of boating, power or sail. A great read for those who want to expand their knowledge of the cruising life style.
If you are a first time boater this is the book that should be high on your list. The author takes you on a journey from the beginning, before you have even have a boat, all the way to the end when you have decided to sell your boat. The author does this with wit and humor; and with a sense that shines a light on the underlying knowledge she has to back up the valuable lessons she is hoping to instill in the new boat owner/reader.
Let’s Go Cruising! By Joy Smith. BEST BOOK EVER!! Joy’s been a cruising friend for over a decade. She and her husband have sailed for more years than either want to admit! I have read and enjoyed her cookbooks, especially The Empty Nest, and now she has given us an invaluable guide to finding the right boat and enjoying the cruising lifestyle. She walks with you through the decisions with her great sense of humor as well as all of the facts you need to know! She discusses weather, boat “apps”, websites for boaters and much much more!! A MUST READ, whether you are new to cruising or a veteran sailor!!
I highly recommend this book for anyone considering the purchase of a boat. This book not only helps the reader decide which boat to buy to meet personal requirements/dreams but it also guides you through information on financing, insuring, registering, docking/storing, maintaining and completely outfitting the boat of your choice. The author is a very experienced boater who shares every aspect of what ownership involves. As a boat owner myself, I don't think she has left out anything that a new boater needs to know about. Although she covers a lot of heavy duty information, her writing style makes it a very enjoyable read. I wish a book like this had been available when I started boating. I also recommend this book to anyone who is occasionally a guest on a friend's boat. The book would also be a great resource for anyone who has been boating for years.
This is a wonderfully helpful book for the landlubber thinking of buying a boat or those who have just taken possession of their own shiny new cruiser. This book covers everything from soup to nuts and then some. The author has clearly spent many years on the water
The book covers everything from the basics of boating to the intricacies of maintenance and even how to behave in a boat, be it power or sail, at anchor or underway. The only improvement I can suggest would be to somehow highlight the safety tips to give them a little more emphasis. The book is well organized and an easy read. And, as a former sailor myself I highly recommend it.

Joy Smith has produced the essential guide to Everything Boat, presented in a very readable, nontechnical manner that anyone can understand and use from the moment that vessel is just a gleam in your eye to the day you come into port after a long, wonderful day on the water. As a former boater I found all the information to be accurate, and I learned plenty too. Boaters operating under sail or power, don't miss this one!
I highly recommend Let’s Go Cruising for those considering the purchase of their first boat and to seasoned boaters as well. What a great resource for all boaters, whether motor or sail, to read and keep handy when issues arise. The author caught my interest from the first page. After a brief introduction, Smith gets right into all you need to know about buying a boat, whether power or sail, then on to important issues after the purchase facts on maintenance, storage, repairs, safety issues, and so much more.
For a first time boat owner, every chapter is useful not only to consider all options when buying, including important questions to ask, but once a boat is purchased, where to go from there. In easy-to- read language, Smith details every possible issue that might arise as well as how to be well prepared before the first launch, during a trip, and coming into port.
Technical terms are defined in clear, understandable language. Everything is covered from needed supplies, kitchen needs, motor overhauls, HVAC, winter storage prep, electrical issues, and weather considerations.
You will learn what to do on the seas in a storm, radio communication, changing tides, and water traffic rules. Smith also leads readers to a variety of sources, in print, through government agencies, and on the internet. For example, I wanted additional information on tying nautical knots. Smith suggests a book that is both educational and an entertaining read to keep young boaters busy while mom and dad go about their duties. Even entertaining is covered, both for safety issues and enjoyment for children and non-boaters.
It doesn’t matter what size or kind of boat, the author addresses everything. I plan on giving a copy of this book to my grandson for Christmas since he is a future boater. I can’t think of a better way to educate him on all aspects of owning and caring for a boat. My family has been in boating for many years, and I confess this is the first book I’ve read from beginning to end without becoming overwhelmed or bored with information overload, tedious facts, or technical jargon. I am pleased to give Let’s Go Cruising five stars.
