Kyle does it again, writing another great book that is complex, deeply thought provoking and exciting. His character development is excellent; they are three dimensional and people with whom one feels empathy. The underlying theme of mind control and manipulation is believable. Highly recommended. I liked Ludlum, but he fell into repetition. Kyle breaks mold, you'll be half way through the book before you get an inkling of the deeper plot.

The story is well written,has many facets, lots of action, and well developed characters. The subject of technology is observed in a manner we rarely pause to think. In the schools we are already seeing differences in learning styles.technology applied to teaching has finally surpassed what we dreamed its potential for enhancing learning that we dreamed of in the 60s ( no drugs necessary) . There is always a danger of new inventions, knowledge, and technology being developed for positive reasons to be misused by some. Besides the entertainment factor, this tome prompts one to rethink our newest tech toys.
I read my first Kyle Mills book about a year ago. When I learned that Mr. Mills would be writing Vince Flynn's new book, I decided that I needed to check out his work. I am now Kyle Mill's #1 fan! His plots are amazing, his characters are real people you feel you know. Every one of his books are hard to put down! I am happy that he will continue writing Vince Flynn's stories, but I really hope he continues writing his own books, too.
Although the topic is really not too far from reality, it is a bit "long in the tooth" with its attempt to intrically capture the essence of the dreaded Dresner or his buddy Eichman (what a name for this character!) Smith and Randi are the heroes, while the cantankerous compuhack sortof endears himself to the reader, while Prez Castill is embodied as the essential political hack that he's become - even his Hispanic ties didn't do wonders to me (I am Mexican) while is go-to-guy Klein is just as duplicitous (he also reminds me of that character Cyrus in the ridiculous B-type series Scandal!) Overall though it is somewhat entertaining but for sure it ain't a REAL Ludlum! Please bring him back!!!

Intrigue, action and familiar characters of the series. Ludlum has teamed with co-authors to produce riveting novels of foreign wars, government ineptness and misconduct, that underline the old adage that power corrupts.....BUT gives hope that the Good Guys will try their best to thwart the forces of evil and right the wrongs of those whose misguided efforts bring death and suffering to the ignorant masses, and justice to those who deserve it. Having studied History and Sociology for some 60 years, I find this authors work to confirm much of what I believe are fundamental traits of the human race, and he tells a tale in a manner to compel the reader to pursue the next chapter and book in the series. NOT sequential, but some references to earlier issues may be better understood if you read in order of published dates...One of my favorites, right up there with Clancy in the military issues and Grisham on story telling. For the feminists, there is inclusion of female hero that complements the male character. Try it.....
Definitely a fast paced action novel. Enjoyable characters with the usual invincibility for the protagonists. The "Merge" is touted as the ultimate techno-tool for civilization...which of course proves false. The Merge is a tool that utilizes a Cloud based software called LayerCake which allows the user to improve hearing, vision, et cetera along with being able to 'see' if someone is evil or good, lying or telling the truth...you get the picture. Here's my primary problem with this novel this requires the user to not only wear the device strapped to the body, but also to implant two electrodes in the skull so the brain is connnected to the Merge...and people do this in droves! I guess in these days of piercings and such this may well be not that far fetched; however...and that is a big HOWEVER, doesn't anyone think about the lack of a firewall to your own brain? The very first thought I had when they introduced the Merge in the story was that this gave (based on the techno storyline) possible external access to the users brain. This blatant weakness in the premise ruined the otherwise decent novel for me because I kept waiting for that proverbial shoe to drop...which it did and I doubt it surprised anyone.
I love the Covert-One series & have read them all in order, but this one is definitely the worst! It is way too techie. Except for a few episodes with Randi, it doesn't get going till the halfway point. Then it picks up & is actually pretty good. But the first half reads like a tech manual occasionally punctuated by philosophical musings. I had to force myself to plod through this since I intend to keep going with the series, but it was definitely a letdown.
